City of Farmington Prepares for Severe Weather Threat

Farmington, Missouri (April 27, 2026) – A risk of severe weather is in the forecast for the Farmington area on Monday, April 27, 2026. Periods of thunderstorms are expected through the day into this evening. Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening will be capable of large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes.

Residents who do not have adequate shelter during a tornado warning or Tier III thunderstorm warning may use the following locations:

• FEMA Shelter at Truman Learning Center (209 W College at 3:30pm)

• Farmington City Hall (110 W Columbia St between 8:00am and 4:30pm)

• Farmington Police Station (310 Ste Genevieve Ave, 24/7)

• Farmington City Light & Water/Development Services Office (101 S Jefferson St between 8:00am and 4:30pm)

• Farmington Public Library (101 N A St between 10:00am and 9:00pm)

• Farmington Civic Center (2 Black Knight Drive between 5:00am and 8:00pm)

The storm shelter at Truman Learning Center is scheduled to open at 3:30pm. For those considering sheltering at Truman Learning Center, you may follow the Farmington R-7 School District Facebook page for updates regarding the shelter. The shelter will not be open to the public prior to 3:30pm, as it is only available for students and staff during school hours.

Citizens should always utilize multiple information sources, including phones, television, and weather radios to receive warnings. Those in St. Francois County may go to www.farmington-mo.gov/smart911 to sign up for alerts.

Farmington Emergency Management Director Josh McAtee is alerting residents that the Bray Road storm siren is currently out of service and should not be relied upon today. “The siren’s panel is not working. A replacement panel has been ordered, but until repairs are completed, the siren will not sound”, said McAtee.

It is also important to remember that outdoor warning sirens will only sound in areas that are inside a storm-based warning polygon, which means the National Weather Service has a radar indicated or spotter confirmed tornado. Sirens are no longer activated for the entire county. This helps to diminish the tendency for people in high-risk tornado areas to downplay the significance of a warning. Countywide warnings are also no longer considered a best practice.

Farmington’s outdoor warning sirens are activated by a system called Rapid Warn. The system, which is in place at St. Francois County 911, monitors National Weather Service (NWS) warning polygons and uses the latitude / longitude of the polygon to know where to sound the sirens.

McAtee reminds residents to review their family’s emergency plan and follow these guidelines from the National Weather Service:

Emergency Plan:

• How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?

• What is my shelter plan?

• What is my evacuation route?

• What is my family/household communication plan?

• Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?

In a house with a basement: Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or workbench) or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. Know where very heavy objects rest on the floor above (pianos, refrigerators, waterbeds, etc.) and do not go under them. They may fall down through a weakened floor and crush you. Head protection, such as a helmet, can boost survivability also.

In a house with no basement, a dorm, or an apartment: Avoid windows. Go to the lowest floor, small center room (like a bathroom or closet), under a stairwell, or in an interior hallway with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down; and cover your head with your hands. A bathtub may offer a shell of partial protection. Even in an interior room, you should cover yourself with some sort of thick padding (mattress, blankets, etc.), to protect against falling debris in case the roof and ceiling fail. A helmet can offer some protection against head injury.

In an office building, hospital, or nursing home: Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the center of the building -- away from glass and on the lowest floor possible. Then, crouch down and cover your head. Interior stairwells are usually good places to take shelter, and if not crowded, allow you to get to a lower level quickly. Stay off the elevators; you could be trapped in them if the power is lost.

In a mobile home: Get out! Even if your home is tied down, it is not as safe as an underground shelter or permanent, sturdy building. Go to one of those shelters, or to a nearby permanent structure, using your tornado evacuation plan. Most tornadoes can destroy even tied-down mobile homes; and it is best not to play the low odds that yours will make it.

At school: Follow the drill! Go to the interior hall or windowless room in an orderly way as you are told. Crouch low, head down, and protect the back of your head with your arms. Stay away from windows and large open rooms like gyms and auditoriums.

In a car or truck: Vehicles are extremely risky in a tornado. There is no safe option when caught in a tornado in a car, just slightly less-dangerous ones. If the tornado is visible, far away, and the traffic is light, you may be able to drive out of its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Seek shelter in a sturdy building, or underground if possible. If you are caught by extreme winds or flying debris, park the car as quickly and safely as possible -- out of the traffic lanes. Stay in the car with the seat belt on. Put your head down below the windows; cover your head with your hands and a blanket, coat, or other cushion if possible. If you can safely get noticeably lower than the level of the roadway, leave your car and lie in that area covering your head with your hands. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges, which can create deadly traffic hazards while offering little protection against flying debris.

In the open outdoors: If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If not, lie flat and face down on low ground, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Get as far away from trees and cars as you can; they may be blown onto you in a tornado.

In a shopping mall or large store: Do not panic. Watch for others. Move as quickly as possible to an interior bathroom, storage room or other small-enclosed area, away from windows.

In a church or theater: Do not panic. Move quickly but orderly to an interior bathroom or hallway, away from windows. Crouch facedown and protect your head with your arms. If there is no time to do that, get under the seats or pews, protecting your head with your arms or hands.

Milling and Paving to Begin in Farmington in May 2026

Milling & Paving to Impact Traffic in Some Areas of Farmington

Milling and Paving on City Streets to Begin in May 2026

Farmington, Missouri (April 22, 2026) – The City of Farmington Street Department will begin work on annual street milling and paving on City streets in late May.

Milling and paving work will take place throughout the spring and summer in both residential and commercial areas, including Columbia Street, Ste. Genevieve Avenue, and Maple Street near Walton Drive. For a complete list of streets scheduled for improvement, visit farmington-mo.gov/public-works .

Residents should note this will impact traffic in some areas and work will be continuous throughout the spring and summer. When working on large scale projects many factors determine the timeline of the project such as weather, contractor schedules, and emergency projects, which could take precedence over the milling and paving project. Because of this, the City does not have a set schedule for individual streets but aims to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The City urges drivers to use caution in areas where workers are present, and exercise patience as this project will be ongoing for several weeks. Please avoid parking in areas where no parking signs have been posted. If it is unavoidable, leave a note with your name and contact number under your windshield wiper so a staff member can contact you if needed.

Public Works Director Larry Lacy said, “The Street Department is prepared to begin milling soon. This process ensures the finished street surface maintains the proper elevation. Once milling is complete, our contractor, Lead Belt Materials, will begin paving”.

In late May, Lead Belt Materials will begin paving the roadways that have been milled. The company was awarded the bid earlier this year and has worked with the City in the past on other paving projects. Lacy estimates the paving will take several weeks to complete.

Farmington Police Officers Engaged in a Pursuit on March 26, 2026

Farmington, Missouri (March 27, 2026) - On Thursday, March 26, 2026, at about 1743 hrs. Farmington Officers attempted to stop a white Ford dually reported as stolen out of Bonne Terre. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Woodlawn at Bray Road. Officers engaged in a pursuit after the stolen vehicle failed to yield. St. Francois County Deputies assisted in the pursuit that lasted 14 miles before the pursued vehicle came to a rolling stop on Pimville Rd. due to a mechanical malfunction. Officers were unable to see in the vehicle due to the dark tint on the windows and locked doors. The driver was taken into custody after a brief standoff, during which the driver failed to comply with repeated verbal commands from officers on scene. A 55-year-old white male of St. Louis was taken into custody and transported to the St. Francois County jail for vehicle theft, numerous traffic charges, and resisting arrest.

Dedication Ceremony Planned for Mayor Forsythe Public Works Complex

Farmington, Missouri (March 16, 2026) – The City of Farmington will hold a dedication ceremony for the Mayor Forsythe Public Works Complex on March 19, 2026, at 3:00pm.

Located at 214 Industrial Drive in Farmington, the complex will serve as the central facility for the City’s Electric, Street, Water and Sewer Departments. The addition of a new building at the complex will allow for expanded office space and additional storage for equipment for the Water and Sewer Department.

The complex is being named for former Farmington Mayor Larry Forsythe. Forsythe was mayor from 2017 to 2025, and city councilor prior to becoming mayor. During his tenure, Forsythe played a key role in planning for the facility expansion, helping advance the project to improve operational efficiency and support the needs of City staff.

Police Pursuit Summary

Farmington Police Respond to Incident on March 3, 2026

On March 3rd at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a white Ford truck in the parking lot of Walmart for careless and imprudent driving. It was also reported that the vehicle may have struck another vehicle while in the lot.

The driver failed to yield and fled the scene, leading officers on a 16-mile pursuit through the city of Farmington while committing multiple traffic violations. The pursuit continued southbound on Highway OO toward Highway DD. At that point, Farmington officers terminated the pursuit.

The St. Francois County Sheriff's Department continued the pursuit. A short time later, a 17-year-old juvenile suspect was taken into custody on Bidwell Road in Ste. Genevieve County.

Charges are pending at this time.

Farmington, Missouri (February 27, 2026) – The City of Farmington plans to hold its annual spring cleanup week this April.

City crews will begin work at 7:30am each day. Residents are asked to have all items placed at the curb and avoid placing anything in alleys. If crews are unable to complete a ward in a single day, they will finish the following day. Please check to see what ward you reside in and leave items by the curb on your designated pickup day, no later than 7:30am. There will be no callbacks.

PROHIBITED ITEMS:

No items your trash service takes such as trash bags, cardboard boxes, or items in garbage cans.
No leaves, limbs, brush, lumber, shingles, siding or construction waste products.
No liquids or hazardous materials.
No items larger than two people can handle.
Appliances must have compressors removed.

Tires may be taken to the Street Department at 210 Industrial Drive on Friday, April 10th for a fee of $4.00 per tire, whether mounted on wheel or not. Only passenger car and light truck (pickup) tires will be accepted.

Tree limbs and yard waste may be taken to the Yard Waste Site, located at 3875 Pimville Road in Farmington, daily from 7:00AM to 7:00PM. There is no fee for City of Farmington residents to use the Yard Waste Site.

Extreme Winter Cold Drives Up Energy Use in Farmington

Farmington, Missouri (February 25, 2026) – Winter often brings higher utility bills. When temperatures are low, electricity use increases due to higher heating needs. This is especially true during extended periods of extreme cold weather like Farmington has experienced this winter.

The larger the difference in temperature inside your house versus outside, the more energy you will use to heat your home. As a result, Farmington residents had higher than average electric usage in January and February, which will be reflected on bills received in January, February, and March, depending on your billing cycle. Average residential electricity usage increased significantly during the extreme cold, particularly for households that rely on electric heat. Wholesale energy costs also rose during the winter storm, further contributing to higher monthly bills.

One way to manage seasonal spikes is through Budget Billing. This option provides a consistent monthly payment amount based on your average usage. Customers must have an active account for at least six months to qualify. To sign up and for more details, contact the Farmington City Light & Water office.

If you need help paying your utility bill, you may qualify for energy assistance through East Missouri Action Agency. To apply, visit the Farmington City Light & Water office, call 573-431-5191 or go to eastmoaa.org.

The Missouri Public Utility Alliance recommends residents take the following steps to help minimize their energy use and lower bills.

Change your furnace filter regularly to keep air flowing efficiently. Filters clog faster in homes with pets or high dust levels.
Keep interior doors open during heating hours so warm air can circulate freely throughout your home.
Give your system a quick visual check each month to make sure nothing is blocking the return or supply vents.
Examine exterior doors for cracks or gaps and repair weak spots that allow cold air inside.
Look at window frames for loose caulking and apply a fresh bead wherever you see separation.
Tighten or replace door sweeps to reduce drafts near the floor.
On a breezy day, run your hand along the edges of windows and doors to feel for cold air moving inward.
Make sure attic access panels close tightly and add weatherstripping if needed.
Adjust ceiling fans to a low, clockwise setting to gently recirculate warm air.
Group household activities into one or two main living areas during the coldest times of day.
Place thick rugs or runners on hard surface floors to make rooms feel warmer without raising heat.
Keep closet doors closed so they don’t pull warm air into cooler, unused spaces.
Lower the temperature several degrees when away or let a programmable thermostat adjust the schedule automatically.

Drinking Water Notice

Important Information About Your Drinking Water

Farmington, Missouri (January 30, 2026) - Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

What happened? What is being done?

Well 7, located near the Farmington Water Park, has historically met the drinking water standard without treatment. Recently, however, Well 7 did not meet the standard, and a Notice of Violation was issued on September 3, 2025. The well was immediately taken out of service. Because the DNR sampling and notification process spanned two reporting periods, a second public notice is required. Well 7 remains offline at this time. The remaining thirteen wells in the system are in full compliance with the standard.

Vehicle Break-In Update

Farmington Police Investigate Vehicle Break-Ins

Incident Summary

December 12, 2025

In the early morning hours of December 10, 2025, officers responded to a series of vehicle break-ins in a residential neighborhood on the southwest side of Farmington. Multiple vehicles were entered, and several items of personal property were stolen, including firearms.

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, warrants were issued for Lamarion Markwick of Bonne Terre, Missouri, for Burglary 2nd (Felony D) and Stealing value less than $150.00 (Misdemeanor D), bond $50,000.00.

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, warrants were issued for Gracie Davis of Springfield, Missouri, for Burglary 2nd (Felony D) and Stealing (Misdemeanor A), with a bond of $50,000.00.

A seventeen-year-old from Leadwood, Missouri has been charged with multiple counts of Burglary and is currently being held by the Juvenile authorities.

City of Farmington Offers Options for Those Seeking Shelter During Cold Temperatures

Emergency Shelters and Day Shelters Now Open in Farmington

Farmington, Missouri (November 10, 2025) – The City of Farmington is prepared to meet the potential need for shelters this fall and winter. As cooler temperatures set in, the City is reminding citizens there are options available for those in need, including emergency overnight shelters, warming shelters, and day shelters.

EMERGENCY OVERNIGHT SHELTERS

The Uplift Emergency Winter Overnight Shelter, located at 609 Wallace Road in Farmington, is operated by East Missouri Action Agency, and offers shelter from 5pm-8am daily. If the daytime temperature is 40° or below, the shelter will be open twenty-four hours a day.

Anyone is eligible to stay at the Uplift Shelter, with the exception of sex offenders and those who have been previously banned. The shelter houses, men, women, and children. Additional overnight shelter options in the Farmington area include the Southeast Missouri Family Violence Council, which can be reached at 573-358-3913, and Shared Blessings Transitional Housing, available at 573-358-2998. Both facilities are located in Bonne Terre, Missouri, and provide long-term support and housing solutions for individuals experiencing homelessness.

WARMING SHELTERS AND DAY SHELTERS

East Missouri Action Agency also operates the Uplift Day Shelter. The Day Shelter, located at 605 Wallace Road in Farmington, is now open from 8:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm Monday through Thursday.

The Uplift Day Shelter offers solutions for those experiencing homelessness. This includes providing nutritious meals, showers, laundry, case management, resource connections, job search coaching and support, and additional services to help meet basic needs and promote stability. Those in need may contact the shelter at 573-454-2304 for more information about services.

Anyone in need of a warming shelter is welcome to visit any publicly accessible City of Farmington building during regular business hours. These facilities are available to individuals seeking relief from cold weather, as well as those who may be impacted by power outages during winter storms.

The Police and Fire Departments will remain open 24/7 during the holidays.

Farmington Police Chief, Chris Bullock, stated, “If you encounter a homeless person, and they are willing to accept help, you may contact Central Dispatch at 573-431-3131. Our officers can assist in getting the person to a warming shelter if needed. If you believe someone is in immediate distress, please call 911 for emergency services.”

It is important to note; Farmington City Ordinance does not outlaw loitering. Loitering laws are often limited because they can risk violating constitutional rights. Vagrancy laws in the United States were invalidated in 1972 following the Supreme Court decision in Papachristou v. City of Jacksonville.

Bullock went on to say, “If you encounter someone asking for money, keep in mind there are many reputable charities right here in our community working to provide assistance for the most vulnerable. Organizations like East Missouri Action Agency and the Farmington Food Pantry can make a big impact with your donations.”

Homelessness is on the rise nationwide, with an eighteen percent increase from 2023 to 2024, according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. One in five homeless individuals are children, and nearly thirty percent of homeless individuals are working but can’t afford stable housing.

Homelessness occurs for many reasons and is not just about addiction. Many people experience homelessness due to a lost job, fire, a rental home being condemned, physical or mental illness, disability, or domestic violence.

City of Farmington Discourages Consumption of Fish from Hager, Thomas, and Geissing Lakes

Farmington, Missouri (October 16, 2025) – The City of Farmington announced today that officials are discouraging the consumption of fish caught at Hager, Thomas, and Geissing Lakes in Farmington, due to recent environmental testing.

In December 2024 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued draft human health criteria for per- and polyflouroalkyl substances (PFAS) in rivers, lakes and other water bodies for the purpose of protecting people from long-term health risks such as liver and immune system damage. PFAS is commonly used in manufacturing as mist and fume suppressants, wetting agents, corrosion inhibitors, coating additives, and dispersion products.

The draft recommended criteria in accordance with the Clean Water Act (CWA) reflect the latest scientific information regarding the human health effects, exposure information and bio accumulation potential for PFAS resulting from contact with contaminated water in water bodies, and consumption of fish and other aquatic wildlife harvested from contaminated water bodies.

Based on the issuance of the draft criteria the City of Farmington tested the water and sediment in City owned fishing lakes. The PFAS contamination in Hager Lake (Industrial Park), Giessing Lake (Engler Park), and Thomas Lake (Engler Park) were found to exceed the draft human health criteria issued by the US EPA. Consuming fish harvested from those lakes is not recommended.

The City and Missouri Department of Conservation cooperatively manage the lakes including the regular introduction of fish stock. Due to the possible health risks associated with consuming fish harvested from the three lakes, regular stocking of fish has been suspended. At the City’s direction, the annual stocking of trout for catch and release season from November first through February first has also been cancelled.

Signs will be installed as soon as possible at the lakes to advise users of the potential health risks associated with consumption of harvested fish. Park users may continue to catch and release fish from each of the lakes.

The City plans to conduct regular tests on the lakes to determine whether re-stocking operations may continue, or whether fish may be kept for consumption.

Farmington City Administrator, Greg Beavers said, "We regret having to impose these restrictions on park users. We have been aware of groundwater contamination resulting from industrial contamination in the industrial parks for a number of years, however, pollutant standards for lakes and rivers are emerging and not yet adopted. The new regulations may take several years to be implemented by Federal and State regulatory agencies. We think it is in the best interest of park users to restrict consumption in advance of any proposed rules."

Important Information About Your Drinking Water

Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

The exceedance is only slightly over the allowable limit. The maximum contaminant level for gross alpha particles is 15 pico-curies/liter of water and is based on a person consuming 2 liters per day of water for 70 years. During that span of time there is one additional case of bone cancer predicted in a population of 10,000 people. The risk of consuming this water for a short period of time is very minimal.
