Fire Department Mission Statement

The Farmington Fire Department is committed to protecting the people, property, and environment within our community.

We will be responsive to the needs of our citizens by providing rapid, professional, humanitarian service essential to the health, safety, and well being of the community.

We will accomplish our mission through prevention, education, fire suppression, medical service hazardous mitigation, and other related emergency and non-emergency activities.

We will actively participate in our community, serve as role models and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all of the necessary resources at our command to provide a product deemed excellent by our citizens.

The Farmington Fire Department protects a city that covers 10 square miles and has a population of approximately 18, 295 residents. Farmington is the county seat for St. Francois County, located 60 miles South of St. Louis, Missouri.

The City of Farmington currently holds an ISO rating of a 3.

Message from the Chief of the Farmington Fire Department:

I welcome you to the Farmington Fire Department’s website. As Chief of the Fire Department, I can attest that my personnel provide the highest quality of fire protection, prevention and education to our great community. The Farmington Fire Department responds to a variety of emergencies such as fires, cardiac emergencies, vehicle accidents, animal rescues, non-emergency assist calls and many other kinds of situations. As firefighters we take our training very seriously. Continuing education is a must to stay on top of changing technology. Community involvement allows the fire department to interact with local businesses and other types of organizations in a positive manner.

Chief Kyle Carter

Chief Kyle Carter has been actively involved in the fire service since 2004. Chief Carter began his service with the Farmington Fire Department in October of 2015. He progressed through the ranks, with promotions to Fire Lieutenant in 2019, Fire Captain in 2020, and ultimately Fire Chief on June 2, 2023. Chief Carter has earned an associate degree in fire science technology from Mineral Area College, a bachelor's degree in fire service administration from Columbia Southern University, and several specialty certifications through the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Prior to his employment with the City of Farmington, Chief Carter worked in law enforcement, serving as a patrolman with the Perryville Police Department for three years and as an Investigator with the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office for five years.

Chief Carter plans to maintain a highly trained and well-equipped fire department to provide residents of and visitors to the City of Farmington with the utmost protection and preservation of lives and property.

Farmington Fire Department Employment

Due to the size of the department, full-time positions are not commonly available; however, we are often searching for part-time employees. If you are interested in becoming a part of our team, please submit an online application or obtain an application for employment from Farmington City Hall located at 110 West Columbia Street. The City of Farmington is an equal opportunity employer.

The City of Farmington employs twenty-three (23) full-time professional firefighters and maintains around twenty-five (25) part-time professional firefighters.

Mandatory Requirements for Full-Time Employment:

Must have a valid driver’s license

Must be a Missouri resident

Have a high school diploma or equivalent

Must be a minimum of twenty-one years of age

Missouri State Certified Firefighter I&II

Current Emergency Medical Technician License

Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations or Technician

Requirements for Part-Time Employment:

Must have a valid driver’s license

Must be a Missouri resident (close proximity to Farmington preferred)

Have a high school diploma or equivalent

Must be a minimum of eighteen years of age

Missouri State Certified Firefighter I&II, current Emergency Medical Technician License, or significant prior experience in the field of firefighting is preferred.

Fire Prevention & Safety

Juvenile Fire Setter
This specialized course focuses on juveniles that have a history of “fire play or fire setting”. Parents do not realize the severity of children that play with fire. Each year the Farmington Fire Department meets with numerous juveniles in small groups or individually for this program.

Safety Tips

Keep any type of lighters and or matches out of your children’s reach.
Never leave cooking or candles unattended.
Teach your children good reasons we use fire.
Have and practice your home fire escape plan.
Install and maintain working smoke detectors.
Curiosity fire setters generally are the ages of two (2) through seven (7) years old.
Problem fire setters are generally ages five (5) through seventeen (17) years old.

Outdoor Burning
You must call the Farmington Fire Department business office at 573-756-2324, choose option for outdoor burning, or go by in person to receive permission prior to burning.

Why is outdoor burning a concern?

The smoke from outdoor burning contains many air pollutants. These include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, and other volatile organic compounds and toxic substances. This smoke also produces tiny particles that are inhaled deep into the lungs. Our body’s defenses can’t protect us from them, so these particles can cause harmful chemical and structural changes to human lung tissue.

Some alternatives to outdoor burning include, chipping, composting, or disposing of yard waste at officially designated solid waste disposal sites. Many counties in Missouri have solid waste disposal sites that have reduced fees or set special fees for yard waste. Contact your local waste management company for specific details.

The City of Farmington Yard Waste site is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:00a.m. until dusk. Leaves, limbs, grass clippings, and other yard waste will be accepted. Plastic or paper bags will need to be emptied and removed from the site. Due to illegal dumping, the Yard Waste Site will only be open on the above times. The Yard Waste Site is located at 3875 Pimville Road, approximately one mile west of Bray Road.

No burning is allowed in commercial zones.
No burning is allowed on city streets or sidewalks.
Fires must be attended at all times.
The person attending the fire must have a means to extinguish the fire (fire extinguisher, garden hose, dirt, sand, etc.).
Fires must be maintained a safe distance from all structures.
In the City of Farmington, you may not burn sawn lumber, trash, or refuse. Only natural yard waste such as limbs, leaves, and grass clippings may be burned.
Reports
To receive a fire report, contact the fire department at 573-756-2324 during regular business hours Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and select the option for “Fire Lieutenant” or “Fire Captain”.

A written request can also be mailed to Farmington Fire Department, 222 East Columbia Street, Farmington, Missouri 63640. A fee will be charged depending on the number of pages of the requested report.
