City of Farmington to Provide Cooling Centers Due to Extreme Heat Warning

Farmington, Missouri (July 27, 2026) – An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for St. Francois County until Monday, July 27, 2026 at 9:00pm. The City of Farmington would like to remind residents that if relief is needed from the daytime heat, any City building that is accessible to the public during normal business hours may be used as a cooling center.

According to the National Weather Service, dangerously hot conditions are expected with heat index values up to 113°.

During the extreme heat, the National Weather Service recommends the following:

•  Drink plenty of fluids
• Stay in an air-conditioned room
• Stay out of the sun
• Check up on relatives and neighbors
• Never leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke, or who suspects someone else is suffering from a heat stroke, should call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires prompt treatment.

Signs of heat stroke include:

• High body temperature of 104°F or higher
• Hot, red skin that may be dry or damp
• Confusion, disorientation, or slurred speech
• Loss of consciousness or fainting
• Rapid, strong pulse
• Throbbing headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Dizziness
