City of Farmington to Provide Cooling Centers Due to Heat Advisory

Farmington, Missouri (June 29, 2026) – A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for St. Francois County until Friday, July 3, 2026 at 10:00pm. The City of Farmington would like to remind residents that if relief is needed from the daytime heat, any City building that is accessible to the public during normal business hours may be used as a cooling center.

According to the National Weather Service, heat indexes are expected to climb at or above 107° throughout the next several days.

During the extreme heat, the National Weather Service recommends the following:

• Drink plenty of fluids
• Stay in an air-conditioned room
• Stay out of the sun
• Check up on relatives and neighbors
• Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Farmington Emergency Management Director Josh McAtee reminds residents to take precautions as hot temperatures and high humidity increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke, or who suspects someone else is suffering from a heat stroke, should call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires prompt treatment.

Signs of heat stroke include:

• High body temperature of 104°F or higher
• Hot, red skin that may be dry or damp
• Confusion, disorientation, or slurred speech
• Loss of consciousness or fainting
• Rapid, strong pulse
• Throbbing headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Dizziness
